KB354: Using PDFs in Moxie

Summary

With the release of Moxie 7.02, Layout Designer supports the use of PDF files within a layout and, as of Moxie 7.03, Playlist Builder supports the use of PDF files within a playlist. A PDF file can be inserted into:

  1. a layout, using the PDF button located on the Home tab of the ribbon.

  2. a playlist, using the PDF button located on the Home tab of the ribbon.

To add a PDF file to your layout:

  1. Upload the PDF file into the Files folder of your workspace.
  2. From Layout Designer, click
  3. Click and drag on the layout background.
  4. Browse to find and select your PDF file and it appears on your layout.

By changing the PDF properties, you can select the page (or pages) you want to appear, as well as set the time for which each page is shown on-screen.

To add a PDF file to your playlist:

  1. Upload the PDF file into the Files folder of your workspace.
  2. From Playlist Builder, click
  3. Browse to find and select your PDF file.

By changing the PDF properties, you can select the page (or pages) you want to appear, as well as set the time for which each page is shown on-screen.

PDFs not looking as expected? Things to check:

As we are using a third-party component to display PDF files, you may notice that your PDF displayed in Moxie does not look exactly like it does inside of other PDF viewers.

Files that have been encrypted with a non-standard encryption method, saved with password-protection, contain document outlines and article threads or use other non-standard filters or formats may not be shown correctly or may not appear at all.

The following is a list of unsupported features:

  • Type 3 fonts
  • Images inserted into the PDF using the CCITTFaxDecode filter
  • CIELab and ICCBased color spaces
  • Encrypted documents when a non-standard encryption method is used or the document is password-protected
  • JPXDecode filters
  • Annotations, with the exception of link (which is supported)
  • Document outline and article threads
  • Interactive forms are read-only

What PDF versions can be used?

Supported PDF versions are 1.7 or below. Versions 2.0 or higher are not supported.
