KB188: Hardware and operating system requirements for DataPipe Server and DataPipe Client

Summary

Omnivex software is powerful and sophisticated and the following hardware specifications are recommended in order to provide a responsive, agile and robust software experience.

Typically, the minimum hardware specification is usually sufficient for running data management software such as Omnivex DataPipe Server and DataPipe Client. Note that display systems tend to increase in complexity as users become more experienced with the software and the display network matures. As a result, we recommend exceeding the minimum hardware requirements.

Recommended computer specifications

These computer configurations are intended to provide a minimum recommendation for a typical system, based on our experience.

We typically recommend pre-configured models from well-known computer manufacturers, but a well-built custom computer that meets the requirements can also be used. Server class components are sufficient for computers that are running DataPipe Server or Client.

Hardware Datapipe Server or Client
operating system Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2003
central processor Dual-core 2.0 GHz
memory 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
graphics adapter Any graphics processor or expansion card
storage 500 MB free hard drive space

Operating system

Omnivex recommends running DataPipe Server on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 and running DataPipe Client on Windows 7. Other operating systems are supported. For more information on supported operating systems, see KB 308.

Earlier versions of DataPipe Server had an option to run in application mode or run as a service.

Central processor

Typically, Omnivex DataPipe and data linking applications don't require a lot of processing power. These applications can, under certain circumstances, place a high demand on the CPU if you are dealing with a very large set of data, exchanging data very frequently or simultaneously running several programs.

Memory

The amount of RAM required for running Display Director and Player is determined by the operating system, not the applications. For example, Microsoft Windows XP requires a minimum of 128 MB of RAM for basic operating system functions, but a minimum of 256 MB is recommended just for the operating system.

If you are running DataPipe Server with a large data set or many client connections, you many need more RAM. In these situations, we recommend that you have at least 2 GB of memory to prevent system lag.

Display adapter

Integrated video or any graphics processor or expansion card is sufficient for DataPipe Server or Client.

Omnivex software is hardware independent and it functions properly with any display adapter.

Storage

The amount of hard drive space required for running Omnivex applications is determined by the operating system, not the applications. For example, current versions of Windows take between 1 and 10 GB of storage space while Omnivex applications take anywhere from a few MB to a few hundred MB for installation.

Typically, you should have at least 1.5 times the RAM in free hard drive space. For example, a PC with 2 GB of RAM should have at least 3 GB of free space on the hard drive.
